Yewlands ‘Bake Off’

Here you can read what Yewlands Academy have been getting up to with their Eat Smart small grant!
Thanks to the grant funding we received, we were able to launch our Yewlands ‘Bake Off’ after-school baking club – an initiative designed to support some of our more vulnerable students in a fun, practical and nurturing environment.
Each week, students came together to learn how to bake a variety of simple ‘homemade recipes from scratch. Guided by supportive members of staff, they developed essential cooking skills while gaining confidence in the kitchen.
The impact of the club has been incredibly positive. Students have learned practical techniques, developed a greater understanding of ingredients, nutrition and food hygiene, and, for many, enjoyed their very first experience of cooking independently. Watching their confidence grow with each session has been truly rewarding, with many students taking great pride in what they achieved.
Beyond learning to bake, the club has also had a significant impact on students’ wellbeing. It has provided a welcoming space where they could build positive relationships with both peers and staff, develop social skills, and enjoy spending time together in a relaxed setting. One of the highlights for many students was taking their freshly baked creations home to share with family members, extending the joy of the experience beyond the school setting.
The grant has enabled us to create a meaningful opportunity that supports not only the development of valuable life skills but also the health and wellbeing of our students. We are incredibly grateful for the funding and the difference it has made to the young people who took part.
